Supermarkets’ technical glitch highlights need for cash

There’s a saying that goes ‘when escalators and lifts were invented, stairs were not abandoned’.

Cash Mar 22, 2024

And that’s certainly the case with the availability of cash in society. Access to cash is vital for many members of the population who don’t have access to other forms of banking and payment methods, but there are times when we all need to access to cash.

cash only supermarket glitch A recent technical glitch suffered in the second weekend of March by two major supermarkets – the problems were unrelated – meant that many online deliveries were cancelled and contactless payments were affected.

Both companies were able to solve their problems quickly but, for a short time, it did mean that cash was needed to get the weekend shopping!

Clearly both retailers worked hard to resolve their problems and apologies were issued directly to customers, along with recompense where appropriate.

In the world we live in, very few companies can operate, survive and deliver the high standards and seamless service we have all come to expect without technology but no-one can guarantee that technical glitches are a ‘never’ event – so the problem serves to highlight the importance of preserving cash and ensuring it is fully available at all times – whether as a primary or back-up method of payment. When technical glitches do occur, organisations that have chosen to go cashless put themselves in danger of losing businesses or even worse – long term customers.
