Weight-loss drugs driving change in Consumer habits

Definitely food for thought

Latest News Mar 17, 2026

Ever heard of GLP-1s? Better known by names such as Ozempic and Munjaro they are the weight-loss injections that are helping some people shed pound - and also transforming the way they spend.
Latest research  shows that about 1.6 million people used weight-loss drugs in 2024 - and that is certain to rise for 2025.

So how is this impacting on the high street and on retailers?

In recent weeks, bakery and food chain Greggs has reported the rising popularity of weight-loss jabs (GLP-1s) is noticeably impacting the business.
Customers are asking for smaller portions, healthier options and increased protein/fibre. The trend has contributed to a more cautious sales outlook, leading Greggs to adapt its menu to include healthier products.

Also in the last few weeks, supermarkets The Co-op, Morrisons and Marks and Spencer have brought out nutrient-dense ranges of ready meals, many with smaller portion sizes.

And it's not just portion size. It's also the kinds of foods.
Protein-rich products have been appearing on the shelves as smoothies and snacks.

There's evidence too that those taking weight-loss drugs drink less alcohol.
A study carried out in February 2025 by consumer research firm Worldpanel by Numerator found a 15-percentage point drop in alcohol volume purchases among households with GLP-1 users compared to a controlled benchmark.

So what might this mean for Loomis clients, in particular those in the C-store and hospitality sectors?

It would certainly be a smart move to take a look at the current product offering and ensure that there are options available to meet this accelerating trend.
Low-calorie and zero sugar drinks, high protein/low calorie snacks, ready made smoothies and protein drinks, and also non-alcoholic drinks are just some of the options to consider.
And how about  some merchandising to draw attention to the products?

Just giving you a little food for thought to help encourage consumers to continue spending their cash with you!
